Other ideas proposed – UCD Assignment 2 project – Generation Gap

Ideas contributed to the group during brainstorming:

  • Product: Middleman robot, which can have non-bias stand, to be the middleman between parents and children. Often parents and children will tend to have very different opinions, which many of the times lead to arguments. And during arguments, both parties tend not to listen to each other. The robot can sense emotions and analyze the things being said. When parents and children argue, the robot will calm both parties and say something to remind them to stop arguing and listen to each other.

  • Product: A radio that can detect atmosphere/mood. If parents and children argue, the radio will start playing stories of relationship between parents and children. As to remind them stop arguing and try listening to each other, to prevent regrets just like the stories.

  • Product: A 3D spectacle that can experience each other’s experience or even thoughts. It is for parents and children to understand more about each other’s stand/opinion. Like why this decision being made, the process of this decision.

  • Product: A 3D spectacle that can read other’s mind. Parents and children may feel uneasy to open their mouth to share about their inner thoughts, they may feel awkward. With this spectacle, users can just think about the things they want to tell their children/parents. And with the help of brainwave, it can generate the thoughts to words. Whoever wear the spectacle will able to see the thoughts generated words.
  • Product: A database full of articles (articles are provided through companies or from the net) sorted by different category. This is a sharing device that can be on TV (works something like Starhub subscription), mobile phone and the internet. For example, children browse through the application reading articles when they are free and when they see articles their parents like; they can send the article to parents through mobile, net or TV. This helps to improve the awkward feeling between parents and children and find out what each other’s interest is. When received the article from parents, children feel they are cared* Also there are translations available and voice translator to help older generations use the device.
  • Game: It’s a game similar to “truth or dare”, team up with a parent, to ensure that users need to do/say something, thus relating back to their family. Main objective is to make them have fun, and to be sporting and forget about the awkwardness because it’s a game.
    • Why do children share problems with friends than problems?
    • Because children feel that it’s easier to talk to friends because they have a common level of understanding.

User test – UCD Assignment 2 project – Generation Gap

(interface of user test)

(people who took the user test)

Sample size

  • 9 total users
  • 4 parents
  • 5 children

User Test Observations

  • Understood the purpose of the application.
  • 5 people liked the scheduler
  • 3 liked the interest system
  • 1 liked the tone transformer
  • They are motivated to call due to the point redeem system

Suggestions for improvement

  • GUI needs improvement
  • Users took some time to figure out how to use it
  • They feel that the application should be separated into 3 different applications
  • Redeem system is not obvious in the video prototype
  • Should have multi-language to aid users

Conclusion

Does this solution work?

  • They are willing to try put the application if it exist
  • They feel that the interest system helps them understand more about their family members
  • Point redeem system makes them more motivated to work together to get free items
  • Improvements are needed for GUI and prototype

Solution proposed – “Rapporter” – UCD Assignment 2 project – Generation Gap

“Rapporter” is a phone application that has different features combined.

Both child and parent will have to key in their interest, likes and dislikes upon installing the application.

1) The Motivation – RapPoints (Works like NTUC link points system)

It will record the amount of time spent to call or SMS each other and convert to RapPoints.  This points can let users redeem furniture or electronic products.

2) Topic Finder ( For parents or children who have a hard time finding topics to talk about)

Allow user to browse through list of topics that 2nd party maybe interested to talk about. List will find the likes and dislikes of user and filter out the possible topics suitable for the 2nd party.

3) The Scheduler (It works like Google Calendar)

A Scheduler that allows user to use it as a normal scheduler and share with each other to view their scheduler.

4) Tone Transformer (Used to ease conflicts and bad relationship between parents and children.)

Tone transformer can detect user’s aggressiveness. When detected, they will auto transform the words into a nicer tone.

Reasons for this idea: Instead of forcing them straight into talking deeper topics with each other, we think step-by-step is better. We try to increase both parents’ and children’s interests towards communicating with each other.

Although our motivational factor for both parties is the collection of points, gradually both parties will get to know more about each other. Through a period of time, both parties will develop a better and comfortable relationship, that they will choose to share deeper things with each other, thus spending more time both physically and emotionally.

Objective of project – UCD Assignment 2 project – Generation Gap

After several discussion, we have define our objective clearer.

“Encourage both parents and children to spend more time together no matter where they are.”

Need not be a physically spending time together. its more of a connection. To let other party knows that you are there.

Assignment 1 – Salt – Day X exist game

http://www.dayxexists.com/site/

Was playing with the game about the new movie “Salt”.

Personally i like the movie because its about action and involves some mystery or spy plots. This game was made to let audiences have a peek of what is the movie about. There are 8 interactions in the game which made user get involved to the movie and feel like one of the character.

There are interactions like, snapping photo by aiming your mouse cross hair properly. Choose to tell the truth or bluff another character. I find that it involves more activity from  user and also have a certain amount of difficulty posted on different stages. As a first time player, the game had brought me into the movie and gave me an experience of being a spy.

I was thinking, if the same type of interaction is not used on a game, but used as a tool to understand certain theories we learn in school, will it made the whole thing easier to understand and user are more willing to engage with it longer?

For example, in secondary school, we learn history. Most of the people had an impression that history is something boring and dry. If the above type of game interaction can use to describe the story of a certain history, eg. World War 2, the students might be able to remember what, when, how and who was involved in World War 2.

I believe the interaction helps to involve the user and make them more interested in the content, thus helping them to learn and absorb better.

Assignment 1- Guess the sketch game challenge

This is an interactive facebook game call “guess the sketch”.

Players are chosen randomly to draw a certain word. Other players will have to guess what the player is drawing.

Players can chat or submit their answers through the chat box on the left.

Personally i like to play this game. Although sometimes its frustrating to draw with a mouse, but the game is much more interactive and interesting than games that relies on mouse clicking. Of course, through the game you get to know more people and have fun with your friends too.

Assignment 1 – My art exhibition @ TFA

This is my art work for the Art and design history exhibition at NYP’s TFA which is held few weeks ago.

Audience was to view the video which show a digital art painting of a depressing picture where there is dead trees and a dead cow and at the same time, listening to an audio which has nice rainforest sound. The contrast is that, what u hear is not what you see. And so, i want my audiences to ask themselves, is this what the future generation had to do? They have to use music to imagine a beautiful world and nice sceneries, but the actual fact was the habitat is dying?

So after they watch the video, i made a fake tree extracted out from the scene and request the audience to pen down their thoughts onto a leaf shape paper and pin them up to the tree themselves. This small little interaction is to let them show what they think about and at the same time, telling them “Every one needs to contribute to save the tree”.

Assignment 1 – Samsung interactive whiteboard

A showcase of the samsung interactive whiteboard.

I personally think this whiteboard is awesome. You can write on it, draw and share your board to other boards. In this case, the teacher can just share what she drew or wrote onto the board to the students. This made the whole teaching and learning experience very memorable. I feel that if i can get to use the board as a student, it will definitely made me more interested to attend the lesson. Also it will be great if it had different sizes or installed onto a small corner of the school desk.

Assignment 1 – An interactive multi touch musical wall!

Found the video on Youtube showing 4 people playing with the musical touch wall. I would love to try it!

Music is the international language. However, not everyone get to play with them.

I personally think this interactive wall solve the problems of people who does not know how to operate an instrument but have the interest to try it.

The whole piece of interactive media was hosted on a touch screen wall. It can allow multi players to join in to have fun. Thus i think this creation manage to reach the target of making many people enjoying the device instead of a one to one interaction.
